EP // BRIEF 7 // SPOT METERING WEBSITE // PHOTOGRAPHER'S WEBSITES RESEARCH

JARED POLIN

Jared is a photographer based in the United States. He is also has a big following on Youtube. He is a very confident character which is evident through his website. His website is very clean and modern with a clear hierarchal structure in place to ensure efficient and a fluid user journey.

Negative
The only thing is maybe the language he uses but this could also be a good thing as apart of his brand would be the inclusion of his personality. He has a flirty and confident personality and this is portrayed within some of the language on his site. For example, the landing page (first image below) the call the action button reads 'Enter me'. This could be absolutely harmless but after seeing his Youtube videos I don't think that's the case. The wording could come across as a bit cheesy and uncomfortable.

Positive
Contend is kept at a minimal. Only using information for the most important parts of the site, such as the 'about me' page. Visual appeal is maximised by using large featured images. The website is generally made up of beautiful galleries and displays of imagery. This gives the user an idea of the type of photographer Jared is. Nothing is left to the imagination, he is a photographer and this is his work. This is what Bahman fails to do with Spotmetering.com, instead of putting forth the promotion of the book he pushes it aside with masses of irrelevant content. Overall, the website is very effective at what's it's the main objective is. Trying to sell himself as a photographer and he's doing that by making his photographs the first thing and sometimes only thing you see.

David Bailey

David Bailey is considered one of most famous photographers in the world and is highly regarded in the world. He's website is similar to Jared's site above. Modern, clean and professional. Fluid and easily navigatable.

Positive
Visual appealing. Big visual featured images, showcasing David's skills as a photographer. With a minimal site, you're naturally attracted to the only piece of information on the page, the navigation and his work. The navigation contains a series of photos with his stock site. Unlike, Spotmetering.com nothing is hidden or a mystery to find. The main object with David Bailey site is to sell his photography through his stock site; this is clearly noticeable from the navigation. He could have put a button to his stock site within the home page but the user always glances at the navigation bar, so will immediately see it.

Another effective aspect is the drop down menu for his photograph series. It allows the user see the subcategories straight away. Avoiding the user from having to go deep in the site to search the subcategories.

Steve McCurry

The website for the famous photographer Steve McCurry.

Positive
Visual images used within the homepage are stunning. It's clear that Steve uses his most vibrant images to attract and entice user from the very beginning. This sparks interest from the user, seeing the beauty and capturing their imagination. Such vibrant images bring the site to life. This factor could be used to draw attention to other parts of the site but Steve, unfortunately, hasn't done this. To make sure no content is lost or overpowered the use of the navigation bar and other dark shapes act as separators to issolote important text and to ensure nothing is lost.
