EXTENDED PRACTICE // STATEMENT OF INTENT

Throughout Extended Practice, my main objective is to concentrate and produce work within my intended area of specialism. My chosen area of specialism is digital design with a focus on User experience. With Extended Practice, I hope to produce work with a heavy focus on web and app design. Overall, the work produced will be of high quality and will benefit me when applying for further study.

To achieve this I will create and stick to a time plan to ensure my management skills are as organised as possible. This will ensure all projects are completed on time and to a high standard.

I plan to increase my skill set within digital design on software such as After effects and Cinema 4D, whilst also improving on my presentation skills.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // PRACTICAL MIND MAP

The diagram below demonstrates a number of ways I can create a graphic design response from my research. Some ways are:

  • Information pack
  • Educational posters
  • Infographic
  • Video
  • Top Trumps
  • Museum promotional material
The two I find the most effective are a collectors pack and museum guide and posters. The collector's pack would be for people who have an interest in the subject and the museum idea is to create a contemporary publication, posters and video for a museum about dictators.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // NAME IDEAS

Below are some names which will be used for all collateral including publication, flyer, poster, website and so on. It will essentially act as a brand. The name needed to represent the characteristics of dictators and come across as eerie and Gothic to give a sense of oppression. The name also needed to be consistent with the style and aesthetic of the publication and other collateral (so, no comic sans for a contemporary publication)

Some naming options were:

  • Dicktators (humorous twist)
  • Dic.
  • Leader
  • Brutal
  • Control
  • Persuade
  • Eye
  • One nation
  • Peoples champion
The name I liked, in the end, was 'Heil'. The word Heil is most infamous for being used by Adolf Hitler with the saying 'Heil Hitler'. Therefore, you instantly get a link to a dictator. It's striking and has its Gothic roots. The word 'Heil' means salvation so it doesn't mean anything racist or controversial and salvation is what dictators promise their people. A better, prosperous life and nation, which often is a lie.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // INTIAL IDEAS

The first idea is situated around the theme of 'Dick-tator' highlight the dictators in a humour light by portraying them as dicks. They would be in an illustrative style and would be used on a number of collateral such as publication and posters. The idea is to educate the public about five dictators but in a houmous way, in a way where there is little chance for anyone to be offended. Below you can see the sketches of three of the dictators with an infographic chart. The infographic chart will give a visual representation of how many people each dictator has killed. Keeping with the theme of 'dick' each 'sperm' will represent a million deaths. However, the 'sperm' symbol to represent innocent lives killed maybe slightly offensive.

The second idea is based on a publication which would be distributed to contemporary museums such as the Topography of Terror in Germany. The museum used to be the headquarters of the Nazi's Secret State Police. The book would have a contemporary and modern aesthetics with an overall dictatorship theme running through the book. Characteristics such as oppression and torment but also a contrast showing the love people had for their dictators through poems or songs. Whether this is shown through imagery or strategic design implementation is still to be decided.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // ADOLF HITLER

Height and weight

Adolf Hitler weight.
172 lbs (78.0 kg)
Adolf Hitler height.
5' 8½" (174 cm)

Facts about Hitler
  • Despite becoming the dictator of Germany, Hitler was not born there. Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria on April 20, 1889.
  • In November 1923, Hitler spearheaded an attempt to take over the German government through a putsch (a coup), called the Beer Hall Putsch. When the coup failed, Hitler was caught and sentenced to five years in prison. It was while in Landsberg prison that Hitler wrote his book, Mein Kampf (My Struggle).

Weird facts about Hitler
  • In his youth, Hitler had a crush on a Jewish girl by the name of Stefanie Isak.
  • There were 42 known assassination attempts on his life.
  • When Hitler was a boy, he wanted to be a priest.
  • Times Magazine announced Hitler the Man of the Year
  • Hitler invented the concept of blow-up dolls
  • Hitler had a nephew named William Patrick Hitler, who fought against him as part of the U.S Navy.

Auschwitz
Auschwitz-Birkenau became the killing centre where the largest numbers of European Jews were killed during the Holocaust. After an experimental gassing there in September 1941 of 850 malnourished and ill prisoners, mass murder became a daily routine. By mid 1942, mass gassing of Jews using Zyklon-B began at Auschwitz, where extermination was conducted on an industrial scale with some estimates running as high as three million persons eventually killed through gassing, starvation, disease, shooting, and burning ...

9 out of 10 were Jews. In addition, Gypsies, Soviet POWs, and prisoners of all nationalities died in the gas chambers. Between May 14 and July 8,1944, 437,402 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 148 trains. This was probably the largest single mass deportation during the Holocaust.

Auschwitz-Birkenau, Nazi Germany's largest concentration and extermination camp facility, was located nearby the provincial Polish town of Oshwiecim in Galacia, and was established by order of Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler on 27 April 1940. Private diaries of Goebbels and Himmler unearthed from the secret Soviet archives show that Adolf Hitler personally ordered the mass extermination of the Jews during a meeting of Nazi German regional governors in the chancellery. As Goebbels wrote "With regards to the Jewish question, the Fuhrer decided to make a clean sweep ..."

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // RESEARCHING INTO POEMS

Dictators are controlling and manipulative. Through a state of control, people of the country are often brainwashed. Through this indoctrination, people become obsessed with the dictators. Often, seeing them as Gods. It's a complete contrast to the reality.

EP // BRIEF1 // CREATIVE NETWORKS // WINNING

To our great surprise, we were told that we had won the Creative Network brief. Upon hearing the news we met with Joshua to discuss any final changes or queries he or his team had before sending the final creative off to print. This gave us a good opportunity for discussion surrounding any feedback we had about the brief, any questions we wanted to ask. We enquired about the sizes of the posters and other pieces of collateral along with an estimation of the budget the Creative Networks team had as this would play a crucial role in decided the scale of things and application of the promotional material. Joshua then asked us how the Brief in the class was received, in terms of clarity and the way it was set up and presented. We suggested making the requirements more easy to understand and that the majority of the class was slightly confused to what needed to be mocked up for the presentation.

After this brief discussion, Joshua gave us clearance to book prints lots and to discuss among ourselves what we need to print and how many to print whilst not going over budget.

EP // BRIEF1 // CREATIVE NETWORKS // FEEDBACK

As soon as we were told that we had won the brief, Joshua brought us into his office near the uni to give us final feedback on the work.(feedback discussed within feedback blog post)

Animation

Starting with the animation, Joshua wanted to completely drop and disregard the introductory animation all together. Joshua didn't clearly state his reasons for that choice but he exclaimed that there was no need for such an energetic and dramatic animation. It was too technical and too much in terms of what a college was after. If it was too out there for the Uni that's completely understandable and these thoughts did cross my mind when creating the animation. It is very high tempo and fast paced and maybe didn't correspond with the true message of professionalism. It seems the Joshua wanted something more minimal with maximum flexibility in regards to efficiently adapting and changing the loop for the next speaker. The feedback on the looping animation was more positive, Joshua stated that it was perfectly fine but to make the loop and transition more fluid and effortless, so the animation can come in and out for a continuous five minutes.

Posters

There wasn't any detailed feedback or changes regarding the posters and the rest of the collateral. Joshua deemed it 'professionally strong' and 'very solid'. However, there was one piece of feedback... making sure the event steered clear of using any original artwork. Joshua told us to avoid using any original images of Mike's work in the background of the posters or flyers as the college may get in trouble for as it could cross into copy write. Continuing from this, Joshua stated to manipulate the original artwork and create it in a more abstract or creative manner. This would allow the use of the original image but as it would be slightly skewed version it avoids any issue with copyright.

EP // BRIEF1 // CREATIVE NETWORKS // POSTERS

As a group, we all worked on the posters at the same time. The posters would act as the forefront of the campaign we're all the other event collateral would be based around. With this in mind, the poster was crucial in determining how everything else would be produced. By having the whole group working on the posters, we all had the opportunity to create some form of design and to ensure a collaborative environment whilst avoiding a scenario where no one was left out. The collaborative effort also allowed an effective space where many different avenues were explored by all of us. We sat together and researched whilst experimenting and brainstorming ideas. Mike Mignola is mostly well known for his comic book sketches of Hellboy, therefore to increase engagement and 'hype' we felt it'd be best to promote Hellboy as an incentive for people to attend the event. Even if you don't know Mike Mignola the chances are you still would know of Marvel and Hellboy this in itself will attract people to the event.

When approaching the posters from a style perspective we wanted the posters to represent the University as forward thinking and a modern hub within art and design / creative sector. The posters had to represent a contemporary look and feel whilst still holding a high degree of professionalism.

Below is the first experimental piece.

The visual is from Hellboy, with a ring of text on top of the image. All design decisions are all from current design trends to emphasise a contemporary aesthetic and Style. The ring of text is an aspect which can be applied to all other collateral, it's legible, modern, and captures the essence of Creative Networks as an event and a community of professionals who are all learning and embrace each other. The colour scheme is minimal to allowed full focus on the ring of text, creating a distinct and complementary contrast.

The second idea could be considered cliche and obvious but it was an idea with a lot of context and purpose behind the choice of layout and design. The ideal is solely based around Hellboy; Hellboy is from comics, therefore to make the link between Hellboy and Mike Mignola's past, the poster is structurally influenced from the layout of a comic book, and this also adds a strong conceptual feel. It's also an exploration and throw-back to post-digital, a time when Mike Mignola was most famously known. The poster as a whole encompasses a visually attractive viewpoint with the potential to efficiently be replicated on to other collateral. But in terms of contemporary and future application to other speakers, the theme would struggle to be effectively replicated. As a group, we felt it was too obvious of a choice and it didn't set a level of standard we wanted to communicate for Mike and the college.

The last poster was a collaborative effort. Whilst I was experimenting and playing around with ideas, Lo and Rhys were also busy experimenting with their own ideas. We ended up showing each other what we had at that time and from this presentation of ideas, we saw potential in everyone's ideas. We began dissecting a number of elements to combine them together to create one informed poster and what would be a variation of the final poster.

The circle element from my design, the hierarchical layout from Lo's  and the rectangle shape from Rhys's poster were all used. The ring of text along with other information within the rectangle promotes a sense of importance and hierarchy, combined with a contemporary and professional Style. The isolation of the rectangle avoids conflict with the visual imagery in the background. By having all information in the box it opens up this experimental and creative approach to understanding how we can create something around the box. It has many creative opportunities whilst also being restrictive. The colour scheme links in with the Hellboy theme making the communication to Mike's work a lot more distinctive stronger.

Application to other collateral.

As a group, we discussed that the rectangles can be used across all collateral to inform a uniformed and consistent standard that injects a strong sense of professionalism and credibility. The rectangle can also be applied and carried across to all future speakers. All that needs to be changed is the colours and visual images within the background. By using different colour schemes for different speakers avoid a campaign that looks the same even though layout will eventually be the same. Lastly, by having a campaign that has a consistent look for all speakers will essentially save time and will create a unique confirmation of what the event is for without reading the information or essentially digesting the poster. Students and even the public will be already familiar with the last promotional material, therefore the visual rhetoric is at work to persuade the user to attend or subconsciously be aware of the event without realising.

EP // BRIEF1 // CREATIVE NETWORKS // ANIMATION

The animation consisted of two elements, an introductory animation that would play on a continuous loop as the lecture theater feels up; acting as a way to avoid awkward silences and a beneficial way to encourage conversation within a relaxed environment. The animation would be to inform the crowd that the lecture is about to start.

I've had previous experience with After Effects, I've worked with the software on a number of occasions last year. Even though I have some form of knowledge within after effects my skill level isn't nowhere near to a professional standard. With this in mind, my normal strategy when trying to improve my skills is to seek tutorials within YouTube. From YouTube, I also seek inspiration and ideas in regards to motion graphics. In terms of creative freedom, there weren't any restrictive measures in place. The only important Factor was to ensure the consistency of the chosen theme. The chosen element to apply to the animation was the featured rectangle. The rectangle informed a consistent and uniformed link to the rest of the branding and the added benefit of the rectangle is the hierarchical arrangement and structure it gives the animation, in highlighting important pieces of information. Whilst conducting research within YouTube and came across this video tutorial (below).

The video is a remake of the animation used within the MTV awards from a few years ago. What caught my eye was how the use of a rectangle was the main focus of the animation, everything else was built and animated around the construction of the shape. It instantly represented the kind of format and style I was seeking within my own animation. With this source of inspiration, I set out to replicate and adapt it to the Creative Networks brief, whilst keeping in mind the restrictions and guidelines set out by our theme and other pieces of collateral already created.

The video below Showcases the final video of the animation. The dramatic abstract feel demands attention and a sense of focus whilst introducing the speaker. The music choice is chosen to counterbalance the powerful and fast moving graphics. The music has a chilled and relaxing rhythm, subconsciously injecting a sense of calmness onto the speaker.

EP // BRIEF 7 // SPOT METERING WEBSITE // EVALUATION

From the start to the very end I loved every step of the brief and process. First off the brief was something that I've wanted to do for a long while but never really had the opportunity till extended practice came along. It gave me the chance the approach a website that was extremely poorly designed and to bring it back to life. Give it a burst of energy and bring it back into the 21st century. My first task was to make sure I picked a website that was trying to sell something. That was the main objective of the brief, to encourage the selling of a product. What I loved was taking the time and effort to really concentrate on the aesthetics of the site. I wasn't too strict to make sure I followed brand guidelines as such. However, the majority of the poorly designed website are often independent companies or people who have no brand set up. Making a contemporary responsive UI was my most favourite part of the brief. The brief demonstrated my love for UI design and I think you can really see that from the results. I tried to push myself as much as I could to try to designing a site that was unique in some respects but to ensure that functionality was paramount.

The brief also gave me the perfect opportunity to learn new software. New prototyping software which is currently trendy as I've seen quite a few digital studios use it and also recommend it to me to try out. In regards to UX, I tried to apply more of the process for the brief. I began to try different approaches to user testing, so by timing people to see how long it took them to reach a certain page and then comparing that to the new site to see the results. It's a great opportunity to understand if I'm achieving the fundamental objectives of the site. If so then it's a success, if not then back to the drawing board. The brief gave me a great opportunity to see how far I could push responsive design and the end result is perfect for my portfolio. Time management was spot on for this brief. I gave myself 3 weeks and finished the final site in just under 2 weeks. I felt this was down to my love for the work. If you love something you would spend the majority of your time on it, making sure it was perfect and successful.

EP // BRIEF1 // CREATIVE NETWORKS // POSTER IMPROVEMENT

After the feedback from Joshua, I adapted the posters to his feedback to ensure no original pieces of Mikes work was used. The updated design for my poster used to type only and represented Hellboy's character in its entirety. The word 'hell' is an obvious choice to represent Hellboy's character but it's the other elements of the design that really gives the word 'Hell' a successful meaning. The use of distinctive colours of red and black with the combination of the gothic typeface/lettering depicts all attributes of Hell as being dark and fiery. The lettering lays on top of the rectangle, this decision ensures a contemporary style while the placement of the text at the front guarantees that I word can be easily recognisable and legible, avoiding being blocked by the rectangle.

EP // BRIEF1 // CREATIVE NETWORKS // FINAL WORK (NEEDS IMAGES)

Below is the final collateral for Mike Mignola creative network event. So far, Mike is the only speaker to attend this academic year but hopefully, a few more speakers will hold lectures with Creative Networks, this way we can really understand and appreciate the real benefits of using the same theme across different speakers. This conclusion would be the true test to determine the restraints and overall success of the Creative Network.

From the very start, it's evident to see the uniformed link each piece of collateral has with each other. In regards to the posters each one is different but again contains a fundamental appliance of consistency and loyalty to the theme. All three posters showcase a number of approaches to Hellboy whilst ensuring a contemporary and professional undertone. The distinctive colour of red contrasting against the black further explores Hellboy's unique and devilish characteristics. The red rectangle is effortlessly applied to form the flyer, almost appearing as if the rectangle has been cut out or removed from the poster; this is due to the effortless transition and flexibility the rectangle processes. The images can also act as a unique limited edition posters - a piece of memorabilia. This effective strategy acts as an incentive and for people to attend.

The front of the flyer contains the same information the user needs in order to attend the event as effortlessly as possible. The information used on the flyers and posters inject a systematic approach to the hierarchal structure of information, allowing the information to clearly be injected in terms to importance. The back of the flyer contains the visual imagery use within the background on the posters. The flyers come in sets of three, each displaying the images used within the posters. The images act as a representation of Mike Mignola life and his success as an illustrator but produced in a contemporary Style to represent the college.

The images can also act as a unique limited edition, in other words, the posters and flyers act as a piece of memorabilia people attending the event can take home with them at the end of the night -- To hang on their wall as there will never be another design like it. This effective strategy acts as an incentive and for people to attend. People love a freebie and by taking the poster or flyer home with them will act as a free promotion for the event in which the Internet and social media cannot reach or infiltrator. In conclusion, the promotional material created for Mike Mignola was undoubtedly successful and professional. A high degree of credibility was constantly implemented throughout the branding in terms of minimal colours and layout, whilst avoiding a cluttered and overall oppressive design. It communicated an understanding of the subject and its author, Mike Mignola. Connecting this with the consistency throughout the event demonstrates a knowledge of not only the subject area but also an awareness of the audiences integrity and sensitivity. These careful considerations will inevitably present the college and Mike in a professional light.

EP // BRIEF 6 // HUNGRY HOUSE // EVALUATION

The brief as a whole has been the most difficult, it has challenged me and forced me to come out of my comfort zone. The real challenge was researching; research was essential for the overall progression of the brief. I didn't know much about the iWatch as I didn't own one. This in its self-caused a lot of barriers that I had to overcome. All barriers were temperamental as I eventually worked around each one by implementing an efficient time plan and visiting stores such as John Lewis to have an in-depth play around with the iWatch. With the brief, I was also able to visit digital studios around Leeds and Manchester to ask for their professional advice. Some studios were more positive than others but overall the feedback was crucial to my development and it was the first time that I had received feedback from UX professionals who have a different outlook towards work. They look at the work from a UX and users perspective. This was a challenge as this different perspective was a lot different to what I had been used too, but I had some understanding of user needs so I was prepared to a certain degree.

The brief itself was a challenge, due to designing for the iWatch. The iWatch to a certain degree is still in its infancy with a lot of undiscovered potentials. The iWatch brings with it a unique user base with unique ways of interactions. Not many brands have embraced the iWatch so It was my chance the fully dive into the deep end and see what I could produce. The app I created for Hungry House was the first of its kind. The pattern grid concept was a successful step in ensuring the user could flow through the app as efficiently as possible. By removing unwanted content and images the user could order food within a matter of minutes. The benefit of the grid system was that users could save their food order to a pattern, so if the user was drunk or stuck in meeting they can order their favourite food within seconds. Overall, I've loved every part of the brief, It's pushed me so far with understanding different devices and users, whilst also being heavily restricted by the screen size of the iWatch. The brief has made me a stronger designer and has only increased my love for digital design.

MODULE EVALUATION

Overall, extended practice has been the biggest challenge, it's been stressful but extremely enjoyable. The work I've created for the module has been some of my best work to date. It's allowed me to build a portfolio of work that relates to my practice. Throughout the three years there wasn't much chance for me to create anything digital due to being given the briefs but as soon as we wrote our own briefs, It allowed me to focus on what I most interested in which was all things digital!

Briefs such as Related, Hungry House, and e-mily have all been my strongest work I've ever create. They all stem from a strong conceptual focus and as the module lasted for the whole year I was able to contact studios to ask for professional feedback and to understand how the brief could be taken further outside of uni. After my masters I plan to create a start-up around e-mily, to see if it is possible to create such a product. I truly believe in what I've created and can see a gap in the market for the product to thrive. Related is also a game I could easily see in the apple store. It's also a game which can easily be pitched to Spotify. The look and feel of the game had been purposely influenced by Spotify to allow me the best opportunity to try and sell the game/idea to Spotify. Lastly, Hungry House for the iWatch allowed the opportunity to see what was possible. I purposely choose the brief to see how far I could push myself as a designer and a strategic thinker. The final resolution was a success, It's forward thinking in regards to functionality and innovation. This is another product that is ready to pitch to Hungry House but along with 'Related', I have no idea where to start or who to contact!

Overall, time management has been the biggest challenge. Becuase we are given around 6 months to complete extended practice you think you have plenty of time to finish all briefs. Without a concrete plan of attack that pool of time will quickly leak away and what seemed like 6 months is now 4 weeks. My time plan was spot on and I managed to handle all 10 project well. Extended practice has been the best module from my time at uni and is a module I wish was given to us in level 4!

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // EVALUATION

The Church of Satan brief in collaboration with Lo was very insightful, challenging and enjoyable. Lo was great to work with and we work very well together. Myself and Lo share a lot of similar interests and topic areas so when I suggested the Church of Satan brief we both became very excited. No only because it's a cool brief to experiment with but it's was interesting to see how far we can push it. We knew that it would be impossible to change how people viewed the church but if we changed one person's attitude towards the church then that's what I call a success. Myself and Lo aren't members of the church but we stumble upon it a couple of years ago and found that they don't believe in devil worshipping and human sacrifice but instead their beliefs are on par with Christianity and personally I think better in some areas. They believe in love and respect for one's self while being kind to other people and animals. If myself and Lo can look past the sheer annoyance and embarrassment of their current branding then anyone can. The brief was about changing people's negative connotation about the church by showing the public the true Church of Santan.

As I've already mentioned, me and Lo worked effectivly together, we distributed work between us, while working together on the larger tasks such as the video and concept. We both learnt to managed our time together while balancing other briefs within the module. The brief was completed a lot earlier than expected which was very encouraging. Overall, I felt the brief was a success and by testing the final out with our intended demographic were saw positive reactions. The ratio was around 50/50 but that is still a success. A lot of people turn off as soon as they hear the word satan so it was amazing to witness people engaging and expressing their willingness to accept and reconsider the Church of Satan.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // EVALUATION

Throughout the entirety of the brief, I've enjoyed every minute. As a research brief, it was vital right from the beginning to choose a subject that was of interest to me; to choose a subject that I wouldn't care to spend a couple of hours researching about. This is exactly what I did, I spent hours watching videos about dictators and looking through a number of books to dig out any relevant information that could be deemed appropriate for the brief. The brief didn't seem like work to me due to my interest in the subject and I feel you can see that within my final resolutions. The biggest issue the brief through my way was understanding people's feelings and the approach to a subject. People are sensitive and researching dictators which include some of the evilest people in history can cause a few problems. It was important for me to not portray the dictators as heroes of some sort. It became crucial to understand why people felt sensitive and to try to avoid any upset. However, I didn't want to step over the line between being careful with what I produce and end up censoring my work in fear of upsetting someone. I didn't want to be so careful that my work turned into boring bog standard work. I wanted something quite impactful and striking but not crossing any boundaries. The brief was about educating and promoting a museum that exhibits this kind of subject. I wanted to transfer the fear and unpredictability that dictators are well known for within my work. This was the biggest thing I learnt, learning the fine balance between being sensitive and censorship.

Another thing the brief taught me was that I have a hidden fascination for contemporary museum books and publications. Throughout the three years, I've always created a number of publications that resemble what you would find in a contemporary museum. I love the modern and minimal style with the dominance of grey.  With this In mind, I've decided to contact Topographie Terror in Berlin to see if I could produce any publications or promotional material for the museum. Overall, I've enjoyed everything about the brief. I managed to finish on time and create work that I was extremely proud of, especially the publication! I think that's the best publication I've ever produced.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // DEVELOPMENT

The development of the idea started by seeing how it could be applied via a website. The website an efficient template to work with when testing out ideas. But if all goes well then the style and approach can easily be applied to the publication and other collateral. The idea again is to educate people about dictators but to also show the contrast between the oppressive side that people outside the country saw and the love the people had for the dictator inside the country. The website would be laid out into two sections. One side would act as the left and right, representing the political leftist and right-wing. The left would be more reasonable and tell the truth of what happened, the right would be people in favour of the dictator which would consist of poems, love letters and excuses.

How the start of a dictator page would look. Minimal look, introducing the dictator.

Adolf Hitler would be introduced. The left would give an honest description but the right would be either a poem or letter, praising him.

Next page would discuss Auschwitz. Again, the left will get an honest explanation of the horrors involved with the concentration camp and the right would make an excuse for the Nazi party for the camps.

*Update

Upon further thought, this approach of left and right would be very insensitive. The topics I'm talking about are very sensitive and should be presented in a respectful manner. By using the right-hand side to excuse what happened with Hitler and Auschwitz isn't the approach I should take. It somewhat glorify's what happened. There shouldn't be no excuses, these things happened and it should be told how it is. The idea of having poems from people within the country is still something I may proceed with as it gives an insight of how manipulating the dictators were, enough that the people fell in love with this god-like figure. But having parts of the page that excuse war crimes isn't the correct way.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // LOGO AND COLOURS

The logo will be the front of the promotion material. It will be the first thing that everyone spots, from the publication to the website. Therefore, it needs to represent a link to dictators in an eerie and striking way. Below were a few variations of the logo. The name 'Heil' was already established and I wanted a type only logo. All variation use black lettering font in some form. Black lettering is hard hitting and visually demanding. When you analyse black lettering it has a very strong and dominant appearance, demanding attention. It's unpredictable and has a strong link to Nazi Germany and past dictators who were active during WW2.

The first attempt was testing the word in upper case. Instantly, the word became unreadable, it's expected with black lettering but there needs to be some readability to it. I explored a number of typefaces such as Bajern, King Arthur, Deutsch-Gotisch and Blackletter.

The font I liked the most was 'Blackletter' It was legible but still retained it's strikingly sharp characteristics. I further explored different variations of the typeface, increasing and decreasing it's tracking, height and width. Examples of the results are below. The second variation is the one that I'm most happy with, it portrays a striking logotype. hard hitting with its sharp edges demanding the user's attention. Lowercase, ensures a readable type and the adapted height and width makes the type oppressive and tall. All attributes of a dictator.

Below is the chosen colour scheme. As the work will be distributed within a museum environment the colours needed to represent a contemporary and modern theme but also consider the how it could strengthen the dictator link. Yellow is the primary colour and would be used for front covers. It portrays a sense of warning. It's more of a contemporary warning colour as using red could become clichè. Grey is the secondary colour, representing the museum as a whole. Other colours such as white and black will be used to compliment the primary and secondary colours.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF DICK-TATOR

So I began to create Hitler as a dick in illustrator. I really enjoyed the process and I think it came out really well It's very humorous with a subtle hint of a penis shape. The illustration would be shown on posters and used as an infographic to educate people about dictators but with a humorous twist. The only downfall was how long it took me. If I would go ahead with this ideas it would put a lot of pressure on me as I would need to do four more dictators and to also create the background environment. At this stage of extended practice, I don't have enough time. It's a shame as I would have gone ahead with this idea but I need to manage my time effectively.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // PRIMARY RESEARCH

I asked a number of peers in my class what they thought of dictator and their thoughts about what I should create for my practical. The responses are as follows:

"They're very scary and creepy. Maybe you can create a video of some sort or an app?"

"Why are you doing that for?"

"I find them very interesting. I would try and create some form of infographic or poster that educates other people about different kind of dictators"

"erm, I don't really think about that topic much. But I find it interesting. I would do some kind of interactive app or a publication"

"Is Hitler a dictator? Can't you do something about Hitler or maybe you should avoid going down that route as it could be quite controversial"

"It's freaks me out! Erm, I would do a publication, educating people about the topic"

"You can produce a card game? Something a bit different and unexpected but I don't know if that'll be appropriate"

The responses were predictable. I knew some people would find the topic uncomfortable, even if they did say it, I could see the expression on their face, looking at me like I was really weird! However, they gave me some good ideas which need some further exploration.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // TOPOGRAPHY OF TERROR

Topography of Terror is a history museum based in Berlin, Germany.

What is the TOPOGRAPHY OF TERROR?

"Between 1933 and 1945, the centres of national-socialist terror, namely the Gestapo with its own prison, the SS headquarters, the SS Security Service and the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (Main Office for State Security) were located on the site that today hosts the exhibition “Topography of Terror”.

This is where the new exhibition “Topography of Terror” can also be seen. It documents the history of the institutions of terror located in the immediate vicinity of the Nazi government district and of the crimes originating from there. ." http://www.visitberlin.de/en/spot/topography-of-terror

The building is a beautiful example of contemporary architecture. With it's wired mesh and minimal structure the museum combines modernist with it's Nazi past. The building portrays an eerie and prison-like feel. This is the type of museum I would see my publication and other collateral being seen and distributed. The inside of the museum is consistent with the outer shell, it's minimal which allows the information inside to be the main focus. When creating the publication it will be vital to embed the look and feel of the museum, getting an idea of the very character and history the museum presents.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // RESEARCHED LOOK AT

Below is the vast collection of research I undertook to gather an in-depth understanding of dictators who active during WW1 - WW2. The research investigated included podcasts, videos, books, and articles. Articles became the quickest methods of digesting information as most articles were gallery's so it's was easy to find what I was looking for. Also, video's were important as they required no real effort to watch.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // CHOSEN DICTATOR AREA

After the initial research development, I've decided to conduct further research about Past dictators. This is mainly due to my interest in WW2 and especially Nazi Germany. Most of History's deadliest dictators were alive and involved with WW2. Dictators such as Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong and Hideki Tojo. This step ensures I'm researching into an area which I'm heavily interesting, which makes the overall work and commitment to the brief unquestionable. The next step would be to research different areas to look into, in regards to dictators who were alive during WW2. Then we can begin to deciding what Graphic design response to create. Further areas to investigate:

- Deciding what dictators to choose and how many
- More in-depth understand of them and what their most evil crimes were
- Are there any interesting facts, stats or statistics about the dictators
- Is there any information that not many people know about
- Is there anything I could establish by conducting primary research
- Asking question to my peers in regards to their opinions on dictatorships

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // RESEARCH INTO DICTATORS

To start the research brief off I spend a good few hours searching the Internet and reading up on all thing dictatorships. I was already highly interested in the subject but didn't know the as much as I thought I did. I spent a while looking through a number of books, articles and videos to understand what area of dictatorships I found most interesting. It was immediately apparent through the initial research that there would either be four areas in which I was going to further research into. These areas were:

1. Old dictators - Such as Stalin, Mao Zedong, Hitler and Kim IL Sung.
2. New(ish) dictators - Such as Kim Jung Un, Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein and Bashar al-Assad.
3. A mixed of dictators - Mixture of the above
4. Future dictators - What dictators could arise in the future and what countries could end up becoming a dictatorship.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // PROBLEMS OF PRIMARY RESEARCH

With the research topic being about past evil dictators It became problematic in regards to primary research. It's not as easy to contact historians about Hitler and the Holocaust as people won't be as open to answering questions. It's a sensitive area and it's hard to find the right people to email. I have attempted to email a number of historians but the main issues are that they don't state what their specialist area is. Therefore, most of my emails ended up being ignored, especially when they find out that I'm a student. I could avoid saying that I'm a student but this causes another issue, as for why would someone be randomly contacting people asking for details about Hitler and other dictators.

Therefore, I have to rely on secondary research for information about dictators. Through, video, films, podcasts, books, and articles. This would be the most efficient and effective way gather an array of research. However, primary research shouldn't be abandoned completely, primary research can be still undertaken to gather opinions about what people would like to see and what they find most interesting about dictators.

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // SENSITIVE SUBJECT - APPROACH

This blog post discusses the subject of dictators as a sensitive issue for some people and how I need to ensure I am not offending people whilst not letting that affect my progress. The subject around dictatorships is a touchy subject for some, especially for those who have experienced some form of oppression from their home country. But also for people who get easily triggered about topics that include death, murder and horrific crimes which are totally understandable. But like myself, there are people who love topics around dictatorships and oppressive regimes. It's important to not feel like I have to censor my work to ensure no one can take offence because as soon as Hitler is shown then someone will instantly be offended.  The overall approach is education and informing people of what took place. No putting them on a peddle stall but to educate people about who these people are and what they did to millions of innocent people. The final resolution will also inform the reaction from people so it's vital to choose an appropriate avenue to go down.

As I've said, I'm doing this subject because It interests me a lot. I find it fascinating how these dictators could be so evil. I don't find them interesting because I admire them or think what they did was correct. It's more of my love for history, especially WW2 and Nazi Germany. Because some people may find the topic controversial I don't want that to be an excuse to censor my work and create something that is stripped down and boring. I want it to represent the oppressive nature of dictators, as a theme that runs through whatever I create. If it's a book then how can I portray the characteristics of a dictatorship such as control and oppression within a book, is it through imagery or selective design implementation?

EP // BRIEF 10 // RESEARCH BRIEF // DICTATORS // AUDIENCE

The target audience for the practical will be people of all ages but mainly people who interested in the subject surrounding dictatorships and history. People who may be sensitive to these types of subjects will be considered but the main consideration is generating some form of practical to catch the attention of people who enjoy these types of subject. This could be:

  • Collectors pack
  • Information guide
  • App walkthrough
  • Infographic
  • Card game

Age range between 18 - 60. The age range is a wide spectrum as people off all ages can be interested in this topic. However, Starting above the legal age of 18 to ensure a sensitive approach.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // WEBSITE

The website ensures consistency and professionalism are key. Consistency throughout print and digital guarantees a campaign that is credible, trustworthy and highly visible. It makes the overall campaign rememberable if all the same branding is carefully applied. People will remember the look and style from a poster that they might have quickly walked past and end up visiting the site for more information.

The video of the website below demonstrates what the overall look and feel of the site are, taking you through what the user journey might be for an average user. Exploring news, history, campaign and eventually how to become a member. The web design is a vast improvement from the original site. The original site design was dark, outdated and cramped with content. The new site strips these unwanted components and instead delivers the user with a site that is clean, spacious, modern and friendly. Ensuring all member sand non-members feel welcomed.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // POSTERS

Below are the final posters for the 'Self-worship' campaign. They avoid any negative connotation that may put of potential members while including trends that we've seen with other religious brands such as Christianity. By using white as the majority colour along with red and yellow the posters are vibrant, energetic and visually appealing. They're are inviting with their fresh and modern appearance. The posters incorporate an minimal and professional layout, removing unwanted information and only presenting the vital pieces of content that are relevant to the campaign. Elements within the poster still pay homage to 'Satan' and the original brand such as the colour red and the devil crown from the logo.

Ano typeface ensures a brand that is well rounded, credible and contemporary to appeal to the intended demographic of young people. Others elements within the poster are purposely implemented to appeal to a younger audience such as young looking members of the church and a fresh colour pallet. With the #templeofyou, the audience will be encouraged to look past the negative stereotypes of the Church to begin to educate themselves. Worshiping yourself is a positive thing which when applied to the Church it begins to break down all negative attitudes to what people think the church is about.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // CAMERON AND CHARLOTTE PHOTOSHOOT

Through the development of the self worship concept, you can see that we used stock photos for the poster mockups. However, we wanted more control and natural photos of normal people and not beautiful airbrushed, cheesy models. We wanted something raw and relatable for the younger demographic. The audience will understand these members are just like themselves in which they have nothing to fear or judge. There isn't nothing special about the members of the church, they are just people who want to better their existence by loving themselves.

Me and Lo held a photo shoot with Charlotte and Cameron, we knew ahead of the shoot that the crown from the logo was being positioned on their head and therefore asked them to pose in a number of funny and energetic position as if they had a crown on their heads. Below are the results.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // SCRIPT

Below are the scripts used for Cameron and Charlotte some of the text had been adapted to make it sound more natural and not come across forced. Some words and sounds that people would use if they were in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Words such as "erm" and "You know...".

It needed to be believable and if it came across forced then the overall message of the video would lose its credibility, instantly turning off viewers.

Script

"Self worship? …You know why is it that you always see people worshipping so many other things but not themselves, why is that? I mean, people worship celebrities and even corporations such as McDonalds or Apple when they bring out a new iPhone. But why do we find it hard to worship ourselves and truly love who we are? Whether we believe it or not we are already perfect, and I think to honour and love yourself is amazing. And that for me is the greatest gift the church has given me."

"Whether we realise it or not the most important person in our life is ourselves. We are always there for ourselves so why shouldn’t we worship and honour ourselves? If you can really teach yourself how to love yourself and constantly implement it within your life you can share that with someone else. By worshipping yourself you can worship and appreciate other people in a healthy and balanced way, knowing how good it feels."

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // RESEARCH // FINAL VIDEO

The campaign video contains the narrative of two church members who are responding to the question: What does self worship mean to you? They discuss their experience and how the church has made a positive impact on their lives

Aesthetically, the video is modern, utilising bright colours in reference to the brands colour scheme. Through the energetic appearance of the members, they are seen laughing, smiling and dancing. Along with the candid footage, it portrays a new side to the church, a side that it organic, natural and 'normal'. Self worship is shown to be an exercise that greatly improves the human experience and draws the audience in through the promise of benefits. The participants humanistically tell their own story, providing personality and reliability through their own experiences.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // RESEARCH // CHRISTIANITY

Christianity, a religion in which gave birth to the devil The religion is the main competition when it comes to the Church of Satan. By looking at their brand and their collection of websites we can determine how they approach and advertise the religion to their audience. How do they portray the religion as loving and caring? By analysing the following website we can draw out a few design trends used across the sites and begin to implement the elements within Church of Satan.

First of the colour scheme is always predominantly white. This gives off a sense of freshness, approachability and comfort. Most colour schemes are limited to two colours. Red has been used for the first site but purple for the rest. Purple is considered God's colour and therefore relates back to a long history. Imagery is very important, unlike the images on the Church of Santan website they feel very fresh and comforting. Thye often uses colourful images with people. People are used to showing to the audience that people enjoy the church and all people of all colour are Christian. These photos are probably stock photos but essentially it instils a sense of modernism and a religion that is still popular, relevant and timeless with happy Christian people. Overall, all sites portray a minimal aesthetic in regards to the design structure. It's clean, professional and credible. A site that can promote the religion as clean and credible.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // RESEARCH // PRIMARY RESEARCH

Me and Lo conducted primary research to see what people thought about the Church of Satan. The church has many negative connotations but hardly anybody who isn't a member knows what they stand for. If the brand wasn't attached to what the church believed in would people see these beliefs as a representation of themselves? Would they see the beliefs as positive and caring and include them into their lives? To find out we set up a survey and ask people what they thought of the 11 statement of Satanism but without telling them that they were from the Church of Santan. We then asked some follow-up up questions to see if their opinions changed once they found out they were connected to the church.

11 Statements

More people said they would include the statements into their everyday life.

What are your thoughts on Satanism? - As predicted the majority of people had something negative to say about Satanism.

"Do they worship the Devil?" - An example of how little people know about the church.

"Possibly but I wouldn't ever want to label myself a satanist" - This comment demonstrate another area of the issues relating to the church. Judgment from society stops people from reaching out and bettering themselves. This is due to religious beliefs instilling the idea that all things Devil related are bad. Even people who have no religious association still fear judgment from society.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // RESEARCH // WEBSITE

There is no doubt at why people are often put off by the Church of Satan. Their website design is dark, creepy and overplayed. It portrays an environment where rituals and ceremonies are common themes along with dressing up as the devil. Through researching and spending time going through the whole site, I feel as if the Church is playing up to the theme of the devil to spark controversy. In one of their videos, where they perform a ritual they claim the video was only made the mock theistic superstition " Watch the film made of our ritual done in mockery of theistic superstition in celebration of our 40th anniversary. Click on this link to visit the special page we've created for your viewing pleasure." Why they like to mock is beyond me when their beliefs are kind and caring.

Through the site supports a black theme with a scary looking logo to really ensure you know you're at the correct website. Imagery is often outdated and traditionalist, often portraying controversial scenes that many outsiders would feel uncomfortable.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // RESEARCH // WHAT DOES SELF WORSHIP MEAN

What is self-worship

The act of Self Worship is accepting and loving yourself unconditionally. At the Church of Satan we believe we should always put ourselves first - after all, we’re the only ones we have.

Through applying these theories to everyday life, you can make a difference to how you see yourself and others.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // RESEARCH // THE 11 SATANIC RULES

The whole objective of the brief no matter the concept is about educating the public about what the Church of Satan represents. People already have their opinions about the church and what they do. Often then no they are unaware of what the church actually stands for and what they're values are and if they did would they be more accepting of the Church. The reason why people are so critical and weary about the church comes from religion. The Devil is considered the worst possible thing on earth if you are religious.

From the start, people judge an organisation as soon as they hear the word Santan. If you look deeper and compare religions against the Church of Santan you end up finding that the Church of Satan is actually more loving, kind and caring then what you will find in the Bible. Below are the 11 satanic rules of the church:

  1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
  2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
  3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
  4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
  5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
  6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
  7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
  8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
  9. Do not harm little children.
  10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
  11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

EP // BRIEF 8 // CHURCH OF SATAN // DEVELOPMENT OF IDEA

The next stage of the initial ideas was to quickly mock them up to see how they worked in context and in poster form. The first idea as you can see below shows a man and women with the crown on. At this time the logo was also complete and instead of using random crown we decided to use the crown for the logo for that extra consistency to the brand. The poster works well with the crown, it's visually appealing and vibrant and with the implementation of a 'normal' man and woman members the poster are friendly and approachable to non-members.

The second idea, based around communicating what the church believes in and what it doesn't.  It's minimal and modern, allowing the information and concept to be centre stage. The clean and fresh aesthetics communicates a brand that is approachable; making sure the brand distance itself from it's scary and cultish past.
