EP // BRIEF 9 // UP YER SLEEVE // LYRICS

'Gone with the wind' was written by Tom Searle who passed away in 2016 and since his death, the song is also played last by the band as an act of tribute to him. In a recent article by The Prp it was revealed that 'Gone with the wind' was written about Tom's cancer. They claim:

With the recent tragic passing of their guitarist Tom Searle to cancer, many fans began to look at the lyrical content on the group’s latest release, “All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us“, in a new light. The band have since confirmed that their single “Gone With The Wind” was written about Searle‘s three-year battle with cancer, which was not publicly known at the time of the songs release.

The lyrics of the song are below. Some of the lyrics below have been highlighted as lyrics of interest. The highlighted lyrics are lines that could be turned into concepts, also they're the most hard hitting and most representative of the message behind the song and the struggle of Tom's cancer.

The weight of the world is resting on thin ice
When the surface breaks will I find paradise?
As I freeze to death, left to reflect
What a waste of time I was, in retrospect
I’d take a leap of faith, but I’d lose my nerve
In the end, I’ll get the hell that I deserve
I’m always gone with the wind
Crawling in and out of my mind
God knows, I lost all my faith
A sickness with no remedy, except the ones inside of me
You ever wonder how deep you can sink into nothing at all?
Disintegrate
Annihilate me
Do you remember when you said to me
“My friend, hope is a prison.”
Hope is a prison
Of all the patterns that I could create,
I built a labyrinth with no escape
To keep my ‘self’ under lock and key
I am my own worst enemy
I’d take a leap of faith, but I’d lose my nerve
In the end, I’ll get the hell that I deserve
I’m always gone with the wind
Crawling in and out of my mind
God knows, I lost all my faith
A sickness with no remedy, except the ones inside of me
You ever wonder how deep you can sink into nothing at all?
Disintegrate
Annihilate me
A sickness with no remedy, except the ones inside of me
You ever wonder how deep you can sink into nothing at all?
Disintegrate
Annihilate me
If I could silence all the doubt in me
Accept that what is meant to be (Is meant to be)

You ever wonder how deep you can sink into nothing at all?
Disintegrate
Annihilate me
Do you remember when you said to me
“My friend, hope is a prison.”

Analysis of highlighted lyrics

"I’m always gone with the wind
Crawling in and out of my mind
God knows, I lost all my faith"

- These lyrics could express accepting what is to come. The thought of giving up is always present.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"A sickness with no remedy, except the ones inside of me"

- The lyrics is describing the cancer that is inside of Tom, with the cancer being terminal with 'no remedy' to cure it. With the only hope for the cure is inside of him, representing strength and his own willingness to fight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Do you remember when you said to me
“My friend, hope is a prison.”
Hope is a prison"

- Hope is a prison is referencing that relying on hope to get better is dangerous. "Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous."-Pres. Snow, THG

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"If I could silence all the doubt in me
Accept that what is meant to be (Is meant to be)"

- I think these lyrics talk about accepting death, removing the doubt that things may change or get better.
