The current logo for Church of Satan is instantly off-putting for the majority of people who aren't educated about the church. This is understandable as it has a number of elements to suggest it's scary, dark and devilish portrayal. The logo doesn't do the church any favours but the whole site is in a similar style so in regards to the consistency it does a great job as a logo. We wanted to completely strip the logo, removing all negative elements and to rebuild it into a modern and visually appealing logo with a subtle link to its name.
Negative aspects to remove
- Colour black
- Devil goat symbol
- Outdated and weird typeface
We threw around a number of ideas but we ended up with ideas that still looked scary and intimidating. We wanted the logo to be appreciated by non-members of the church in a no threating way. We tried a number ways we could simplifying symbols associated with the religion. In the end, we decided on representing the logo with a crown. We knew what the concept was and therefore based the logo from the tagline 'Self-worship'. The crown represents the king or queen which relates to the tagline as the person is their own king or Queen and they should worship themselves.
Below are a number of sketches, testing out a variety of crowns in all shapes and sizes.
While sketching we were also experimenting with typefaces and colours. We wanted a typeface that was readable and modern while avoiding any sans-serif typeface as a san-serif font is more sharp and traditional which are all negative characteristics when applied with Church of Satan. The typeface we decided on was Ano. Ano is a strong, modern and rounded font.
Below is the chosen colour scheme for the logo and brand. We wanted to strip away the dominantly darker colours that you see in their brand and swap it for a lighter colour. The colours also pay homage to where the church was founded. The church was founded by Anton LaVey at a German festival, hence the German colours. The primary colour will be white with the text colour in black. The red and yellow will be used for buttons and links ect.
We also experimented with gradients of the colour scheme. To see if this vibrant option could be appealing and suitable.
Below is the final logo for the Church of Satan. The logo portrays a friendly, professional and modern characteristic with different weights to create depth and focal points. This typeface is inviting and much friendlier than the harsh and dark version of the original.
The icon for the identity is a crown which subtly represents ‘devil horns’. The shape is proud, elegant and communicates the core values of Satanism, that you are your own god and worship yourself, not any other force, object or being. Satanism represents the self, and the crown effectively conveys this through the connotations of royalty and pride. The abstract structure is modern and clean, the minimal elements update the current logo effectively.
