As you can see from the first image there were many initial ideas flying around. The lyric I decided to create the concept around was the lyric "Hope is a prison". This lyric had a lot of weight and strength behind it. It could mean a lot of things and could be visually represented by anything. As the lyric talks about hope, it instantly connects with a lot of people. We all have relied on hope in one way or another as we frequently attach it to positive and negative situations.
As most of the sketches were very quick and rough, below are four clear sketches of the strongest ideas.
Idea 1
The first idea explores hope as a fragile form. The idea demonstrates that hope will eventually die and shouldn't be relied on. The mockup shows a cage with deflating ballons hanging off the bars. The balloons representing hope as a fragile object with the cage trapping in hope. Ballons slowly deflate and with that deflation comes the end of one's hope.
Idea 2
The second idea plays on the concept of being lost and unable to escape. That notion that you are so near yet so far. The idea is a person who has trapped down a hole with people looking over the edge at the person. This idea feeds back to Tom from the band and his struggle for hope. He is stuck down this hole with no way out. His only hope is his family and friends who appear on the edge. He can have hope that they can help him get out but inevitably it's impossible.
Idea 3
This idea is a bit morbid but it's to do with the type of cancer Tom had, which was skin cancer. The idea consists of a man on a zoomed in piece of skin and the spikes that are trapping him are the hairs. The idea is that Tom is being trapped in by the skin cancer that is slowly killing him with no hope of getting out.
Idea 4
The last idea is similar to the first idea with the balloon representing hope. This idea uses the same balloon but the balloon is being pinned in by four spikes. With the balloon being so fragile, with any move, the balloon will pop ending any hope. The idea demonstrates how fragile hope is and and the wrong move will diminish any chance of a happy outcome. Hope can't be relied upon as it can pop at any moment.
